7 suspended following attack on New Jersey transgender student

Kylie Perez, the 14-year-old freshman at Newark's East Side High School who was viciously beaten by classmates in the school's hallway, plans to speak this month during a string of assemblies on tolerance, according to reports.

In the attack caught on camera below, Perez was kicked and punched. As a result, seven total students were suspended.

The students will have hearings this week to determine long-term placement and disciplinary measures, according to a statement from Newark Public Schools.

The incident is being investigated as an "alleged bias crime," Kathy Carter, spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office said.
