N.J. lawmaker says call for public executions for drug dealers was a joke

NEWTON -- State Assemblyman Parker Space said he wasn't being serious when he called for executing drug dealers "high at noon" on the town's historic square.

"It was a sarcastic joke," Space, R-24th District, told NJ Advance Media on Wednesday.

Space made the eyebrow-raising comment at a Republican candidates' debate Tuesday, sponsored by the New Jersey Herald and broadcast on Facebook Live, in response to a question about the opioid and heroin epidemic.

The debate was held six days after a Colorado congressman reacted incredulously to Space relating a description of Boulder as "disgusting" and laden with zombies to explain his opposition to marijuana legalization.
