N.J. homeless shelter rescued from closure by $260K surge in donations
TRENTON -- The Rescue Mission of Trenton, facing its biggest crisis in its 101-year history, made a plea to the community for help last fall -- and the response was overwhelming.
The nonprofit raised more than the needed $200,000 to help close the $400,000 deficit for its emergency shelter and services program.
The Rescue Mission was unsure whether it'd be able to keep the shelter's doors open past June 30, but thanks to a surge of donations in just four months, it was given a year's reprieve.
"If we don't lose other funding, we anticipate being good through June 2018. But during that time, we have to find other ways to have long-term stability for the program," CEO Mary Gay Abbott-Young said. "You can't jump from crisis to crisis; it's not a good operation."
