Civil rights groups to appeal Red Bank Charter renewal

Red Bank Charter School was renewed for five years by the state Department of Education.

Civil rights groups say they plan to appeal that decision.

Two of the groups prompted a federal investigation into the school.

Civil rights groups in New Jersey plan to appeal the decision to renew Red Bank Charter School for another five years, including two groups that prompted a federal investigation of the school.

The Latino Coalition of New Jersey and Fair Schools Red Bank, which filed federal complaints against the school last year, are joined by the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey in opposing the decision by the state Department of Education to renew the school's charter. Charters in the state must get renewed every five years.

"This charter renewal perpetuates and institutionalizes a segregated school system, in violation of the New Jersey Constitution,” ACLU of New Jersey Legal Director Ed Barocas said in a statement. “Yet the Commissioner endorsed a system wherein Red Bank has crafted two sub-districts: one for the majority of white students and one for mostly Latino students. That is unlawful, discriminatory, and against public policy."
