1 in 11 N.J. bridges are in need of repair
WASHINGTON -- Every day, 197,767 vehicles cross Mill Road on the Garden State Parkway in Union County, a 64-year-old bridge in need of repairs.
Two other heavily traveled Garden State Parkway bridges also built in the 1950s, over the Third River and Second River in Essex County, have sections in poor condition. They are among the 50 most heavily traveled deficient bridges in the nation, according to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.
While Turnpike Authority spokesman Thomas Feeney said the road decks on those three spans now are being rebuilt, hundreds of other bridges in the state still await repairs.
Overall, more than 600 New Jersey bridges are rated as needing repairs at the end of 2016, the Federal Highway Administration said in its latest report on the condition of the nation's spans.
