Burning Man gets BLM permit, officially not canceled

It's official: That behemoth pilgrimage of hippies, hipsters, ravers and a few real Burners is coming back to our backyard this year.

Burning Man received its 2017 permit on Sunday from the Bureau of Land Management, the federal agency that oversees the health, safety and security operations at the 68,000-person arts hoopla in the Black Rock Desert just two hours north of Reno.

Up until a month ago, the desert playa was partially underwater due to flooding from this winter's heavy precipitation, but it has dried out in recent weeks.

This year's Burning Man event is themed "Radical Ritual" and is scheduled for Aug. 27 to Sept. 4.

Burning Man workers and volunteers will spend the next month laying out the infrastructure for Black Rock City, and will spend a month after the event taking it down.
