Protesters take to Virginia Street Bridge in Reno: 'This is America'
Local protesters joined another surge of demonstrations across the nation Sunday against President Trump’s executive order on immigration.
Organizers from the Reno Solidarity Network estimated nearly 500 people lined the sidewalks on the Virginia Street Bridge in downtown Reno. According to the Reno Police Department, the demonstration was peaceful and no arrests were made.
“We came together last week for the Women’s March, and we talked about showing up for all the series of attacks on causes that would surface with the new Trump administration,” organizer Felicia Perez said. “It’s been the first week and so many things have happened since last Saturday, and we decided that we needed to come out in order to stay true to the statements and commitments we made.”
Organizers also called upon Mayor Hillary Schieve Sunday. According to organizer Emily Hobson, they want Shieve to “make statements against the ban, in support of immigrants and refugees and to more clearly establish Reno as a sanctuary city."
