Senators endorse speed limit hike in Nebraska, but not on interstate

Legislation to boost speed limits on Nebraska highways by 5 miles per hour cruised through first-round consideration in the Legislature on Wednesday night after senators removed a provision that would authorize a hike in the interstate speed limit.

The bill (LB1009) cleared its first-stage speed bump on a 35-2 vote.

Sen. Jim Smith of Papillion authored an amendment that removed a provision that would have authorized the Nebraska Department of Transportation to hike the speed limit on portions of the interstate from 75 mph to 80 mph.

Smith's amendment was approved 34-1 after receiving an endorsement from Sen. John Murante of Gretna, sponsor of the legislation, who said he was content to "focus on our rural highways."
