Is Philipsburg a nice place?

My Philipsburg story:

Twenty-two years ago, I drove across the country from Washington state to Virginia. I made a lot of stops along the way to look at the local sights. Headed east from Missoula, I decided to take the long way from Missoula to Butte, so I turned off the Interstate and took the scenic route.

At the time, the flex plate in my car was getting badly worn. The flex plate is the thing behind your engine with gear teeth cut in its circumference. When the teeth wear, your starter can no longer engage that portion of the flex plate with the worn teeth. One consequence is that I tried not to turn off my car's engine once it was going. Well, anyway....

In Philipsburg, I thought I'd look over the old courthouse. I parked my car on the street and left the engine running. I took my time looking at the courthouse, and when I was done, I went back to my car, which, of course, was right where I had left it parked, and drove on to Anaconda and Butte.

You might not be able to do that today, but back then you could.

That's my Philipsburg story.

3. If you like a quiet lifestyle.

I spent an afternoon there just exploring. There seems to be an effort to revitalitze the downtown with stores, coffee shops and restaurants. There is a lot of hometown pride.

5. It's a tiny ex-mining town that's trying to live on the edge of a resort.

It's relatively isolated and a good distance from anything Urban. A good distance in Montana is usually at least 2 hours on the road, if not more. It's sort of on the edge of a resort for wealthy folk. In 2010 it had just over 800 residents.

That doesn't mean it has no culture or future but it can be a very small place at times, especially in winter.
I'd not move there without a substantial income as the options for other work are slim in Montana.
It is a good location if you enjoy being outdoors since there is a lot of it nearby.

The nearest airport is in Butte 59 miles South by East. Missoula is about an hour or about 75 miles or more the other way. While you are not way out in the middle of no-where you will want a car, and the means and time to use it.

I have family in Hamilton and Corvallis have seen much of this part of Montana over the last 20 years.
