A severe thunderstorm with up to 120 mph winds hit Glendive on Monday night, leaving much of the city without electricity. Crews continued throughout Tuesday to work to get power restored to many residents.
A National Weather Service report said that powerful straight-line winds damaged buildings, tipped over grain bins and flattened power lines in the Glendive area during the storm. ... Speeds were measured at 90 mph at the airport before the measurement instrument was blown off the roof and an airplane hangar was destroyed.
The report said that at least five metal electrical transmission towers west of Glendive along Highway 200 “crumbled.” Officials estimated that winds would have to be at least 120 mph to cause the damage. Several wooden power poles in the area were snapped.
{Montana-Dakota Utilities} (MDU) brought in repair crews from towns in North Dakota, including Dickinson, Williston and Bismarck, N.D., in addition to two contract crews, Hanson said. Downed lines were still being reported, and some customers need electricians to repair damage that occurred beyond their meter before MDU can fix their service lines.
