Gianforte signs permitless carry bill

Gov. Greg Gianforte signed Thursday legislation that greatly increases the places in Montana where people can carry concealed firearms without permits.

“Every law-abiding Montanan should be able to defend themselves and their loved ones,” Gianforte said at the signing ceremony. “That’s why today I’m signing HB102 into law.”

The governor said Montanans deserve the right to defend themselves, especially because the new administration of Democrat U.S. President Joe Biden was calling on Congress to pass “anti-gun laws” mandating universal background checks and banning semiautomatic weapons.

Similar bills to HB102 died in the past in Montana, at least once by veto from a Democrat governor, but Gianforte is the first Republican in that seat in 16 years.

New gun carry law has campus officials pondering


The implications of Montana’s new constitutional-carry gun law will take some time to settle out on the state’s college campuses.

“There are two things we know,” Montana University System Deputy Commissioner Kevin McRae said on Friday. “First, the Board of Regents’ May meeting will have a lot of decisions to make regarding firearms policy. And second, the regents and the U system will stay committed to keeping our campuses safe places for students and staff and the public to teach and learn and grow and thrive.”

Gov. Greg Gianforte signed House Bill 102 on Thursday, which allows law-abiding gun owners to carry concealed firearms for self-protection without written authorization from the government. The law takes away the ability of local governments to restrict open or concealed carrying of firearms except in places like government offices or other secure areas. It gives private property owners the ability to prohibit carrying guns on their grounds.

And it requires the Montana University System to drop its restrictions on campus carry by June 1.

1. Montana Republicans must have a real fear of their fellow Montana residents.

To think your fellow citizens are so dangerous that you need to carry a firearm everywhere you go in order "to defend themselves and loved ones."

Defend them from what? From fellow Montanans carrying guns, of course.

Look for out of state enrollment at the University of Montana to drop. Which is a shame, because back in the day it was home to some really fine scholarship.

2. They need to have their gunz to scare the tourists...

And then they'll claim that they aren't making enough money because no tourists. Self-fulfilling prophecies are a thing with them.

They also have a serious problem with democracy.

It's not just the gun laws either, they have at least five antiabortion laws in the pipeline along with a couple voter suppression laws and attempts to rewrite the state Constitution and rules for legislature so that Democrats can only have one member on any committees.

3. I think that it is cute that they will still ban firearms in government offices.

They will protect themselves, but everyone else is on their own.
