One University of Montana college isn't getting cut, but the dean isn't celebrating
Just one college at the University of Montana is getting a boost to its bottom line as the flagship cuts $5 million from its teaching budget.
The W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation's budget target puts $50,000 more in its coffers in 2021 than it had in the 2018 fiscal year. Dean Tom DeLuca said he appreciates the investment in the college, but he also is uneasy for the liberal arts campus.
Students from across the country head to UM for its top-ranked wildlife biology program. But DeLuca said its strength is linked to the health of the rest of the university, its liberal arts and sciences in particular.
The UM budget plan takes a $3.9 million bite out of the $19.7 million the College of Humanities and Sciences has for instructional staff. Yet to advance in wildlife biology, DeLuca said undergraduates need to take classes such as chemistry, English and biology.
