Proposed bill would repeal new Missouri gasoline tax increase
BOONE COUNTY — Ashland State Representative Sara Walsh said Sunday she was leading an effort to repeal Missouri’s recent gasoline tax increase. Walsh planned to sponsor a bill next month that would repeal the tax the legislature approved during the 2021 session.
Walsh said her bill was aimed at helping Missourians who are struggling to make ends meet. Walsh thought the state gasoline tax increase never would have passed if the people had been allowed to vote on it.
Walsh said, “The lobbyists that were supporting it clearly and openly said that if this goes on a ballot, the people would more than likely vote no. That’s why they wanted us to pass it.”
Several legislators argued the bill violated Missouri's Hancock Amendment. The 1996 legislation prevents the General Assembly from raising taxes above a certain threshold without voter approval. The ability for taxpayers to get the new gasoline tax refunded, if they save receipts and file a claim, met the constitutional requirement.
