Schnucks buying 19 Shop 'n Save stores in 'generational transaction,' with plans to rebrand them as

Schnuck Markets has agreed to buy roughly half of the Shop ‘n Save stores in the St. Louis area in a deal that CEO Todd Schnuck called a “generational transaction.”

The 19 Shop ‘n Save stores to be acquired — 14 on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River and five in the Metro East — will be closed in waves of three beginning October 7, undergo a renovation and reopen as a Schnucks store less than three days later.

A schedule of the closures and reopenings has not yet been released. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The approximately 1,500 Shop ‘n Save union-represented employees working at those locations will be offered jobs at the Schnucks stores, pending a background check.

I’m glad to hear that...we have a Shop ‘N Save that we like to walk to, and we were worried about what would happen to it with the announcement of the sale of the Shop ‘N Save brand. Ours will be converted, but I wonder what will happen to the existing Schnuck’s that’s about a mile away?

according to the article. Good news for those who can pick up jobs at the stores to be rebranded, less so for those who will not be. That said, I know that Schnucks is running short staffed at pretty much every location and that even those at the locations to be closed might do worse than put in an application for a job if they choose to stay in the business. Hopefully UFCW 655 can be of help to them as well in finding work for them.

I liked Shop 'n Save and it was sad to see them go. When the local Shop n' Save near me closed (the shopping center is owned by Stan K of Walmart and they apparently jumped the rent up a huge amount (70% I hear)) so the local Shop 'n Save closed and sent its employees to other stores, some employees went elsewhere (this was sad) and the inventory got scattered everywhere.

This whole thing is a sad mess but the jobs hopefully will still be there/retained, and I will start (already have) shopping at Schucks.
