Gov. Greitens' request to cross-examine special session witnesses not in the cards
JEFFERSON CITY Gov. Eric Greitens' request to cross-examine witnesses would not be granted in an early draft of the rules proposed for a special session that could lead to his impeachment.
"Only appointed members of the special committee may question witnesses," is one of the rules in a resolution filed by Rep. Jay Barnes, the Jefferson City Republican who has been leading the legislative investigation into the GOP governor. Rep. Gina Mitten, the ranking Democrat on the investigative committee, is a co-sponsor.
And another rule proposes that "only persons called as witnesses by the special committee may testify as witnesses."
The House will have to vote to adopt the rules, which are subject to amendment. But as it stands, key procedural components that Greitens' attorneys had characterized as crucial to ensure the governor was treated fairly are not in the cards for the special session.
