Bill aims to curb Mississippi Delta teacher shortage

Former Mississippi Gov. William Winter has often said, “The only road out of poverty runs by the schoolhouse door.”

In the Mississippi Delta, the schoolhouse doors might be aged and battered, but they are open.

And chances are more often than not that the resource-poor school districts housing those weathered frames are fighting to recruit teachers.

Adding to the woes is a shrinking pool of applicants.

The number of elementary degrees awarded through the state’s traditional teacher programs has decreased by more than 30 percent since 2010.
