A officer involved shooting in Jackson leaves one man dead

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - A deadly-officer involved shooting in Jackson Wednesday evening, it happened around 5 p.m. on Mayes Street near Lampton Avenue. The female officer who fired the deadly shot has been placed on administrative leave with pay as police investigate this shooting.

“The officer's life was in imminent danger from what we know now," said Chief Lee Vance. "It appears to be justified use of deadly force.”

Vance is defending his officer who shot and killed a man in west Jackson. Vance said his officers were called to assist American Medical Response paramedics. They were having trouble transporting a man to who was acting disorderly.

“At first, he talked about going to the hospital, but had some object in his possession that the paramedics did not want on the ambulance,” added Vance.

Man shot in leg in Jackson's second officer-involved shooting of the day

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - A man was shot in the leg Wednesday night in Presidential Hills after running from police. Sgt. Roderick Holmes says the man ignored an administrative checkpoint. Further down the street the man stopped but sped off when officers walked toward his vehicle.

Sgt. Holmes tells us a brief vehicle pursuit followed until the man drove his car off the road into a yard. He got out and police began a foot pursuit.

One of the officers noticed a black object in the suspect's hand. Police ordered him to drop it, but he turned and ran. At one point he turned and pointed the object at police and a shot was heard. Police returned fire, hitting the suspect in the leg.

Police say he tried to turn and run again but was apprehended.
