Mississippi counties face potential problems because of state budget woes

With the deadline to pass a budget for the upcoming fiscal year less than a month away, some counties are faced with the challenge of plugging financial holes created by state budget woes.

And, for Hinds County, that means contemplating a small millage increase.

By state law, counties must approve their budgets by Sept. 15 for their upcoming fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

"As can be anticipated, state decreases will result in some increases at the county level," Hinds County Supervisors' President Darrel McQuirter said. "There are some critical areas where major state-implemented cuts may present some challenges for funding.
