State auditor Pickering: Meeting with Diamondhead council was not illegal

DIAMONDHEAD — State Auditor Stacey Pickering said Monday the meeting he had with four of Diamondhead’s five City Council members Jan. 31 that Mayor Tommy Schaefer described as illegal. was not a violation of the Open Meetings Act.

Schaefer called it a “blatant violation.”

The council members had requested a meeting with Pickering, which took place the day before the state auditor's office publicly released its performance audit review of the city. The review covers such topics as finances and separation of powers, and other aspects of the city’s governance.

Pickering's office released a statement Monday afternoon saying the meeting was not illegal and did not violate the state's Open Meetings Act.

Pickering met the four members to provide a copy of the city's review to the four members, according to the statement.
