Turkeys tossed when semi overturns near Hewitt, Minn.
HEWITT, Minn. -- A freezing rain coated the region with a slick surface Monday morning, Jan. 7 as a truck hauling live turkeys slid from the roadway into a ditch off Hwy 71.
At 2:24 a.m., Monday, the Minnesota State Patrol responded to and investigated a one-vehicle (semi) rollover crash just south of Hewitt. According to Jesse Grabow, Minnesota State Patrol public information officer, the semi was traveling along Hwy 71 near Hewitt when it ran off the icy roads into the ditch. The driver of the semi, Victor Plante, 60, of Maynard, got out of the semi uninjured. Shortly after that, the load of turkeys shifted and the semi tipped over.
Crews could be seen picking up the birds and placing them in cages around 8:30 a.m. Monday, so they could be transported from the scene. While the birds didnt make a dash for the nearby swamp, most appeared to be alert standing in the snowy ditch.
Motorists slowly passed by the scene while being directed by Minnesota State Patrol in the icy conditions. Much of the region was under a no-travel advisory at the time. That advisory was later lifted.
