They're heavy, and there's some work to be done tidying up the polling place. Election judges, often retirees who have been working all day, then have to drive rural roads in tricky weather to get these boxes to the clerk's office in the county seat. In my rural county, first reports generally don't come in until about an hour after polls close -- and that's from precincts right there in town.
