Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Annual Kite Festival
is set for January 22
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board presents the 20th Annual Kite Festival. Kites of all shapes, sizes, colors and themes will fly over frozen Lake Harriet! Fun family festival activities include art activities provided by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, ice fishing provided by Tips Outdoors and a marshmallow roast. Minnesota Kite Society experts will demonstrate maneuvering spectacular kites throughout the day, offer their expertise to kite flying enthusiasts and to those who are new to the pastime. Bring your own kite, or buy an inexpensive one at the lake.

Now, logic might suggest that a kite festival would take place in the summer. Not in Minnesota. Take advantage of the coldest month of the year for an outdoor kite festival. Right now it's projected to be 18 degrees F on Jan 22, balmy by January standards. Just two days earlier, the projection is -1 high and -12 low. Weather forecasts being what they are, they could well be facing subzero weather for their kite festival. Only in Minnesota.

A frozen lake provides a great kite flying area free from obstacles.
