Minnesota reports 89 COVID-19 cases in vaccinated individuals

Minnesota has identified 89 "breakthrough" cases of COVID-19 in which people contracted the infectious disease after being fully vaccinated.

None are among Minnesota's 6,798 COVID-19 deaths, including nine deaths reported Wednesday, and doctors said even those that were hospitalized had milder illness.

(snip)

Minnesota on Wednesday reported that 1,454,834 people in the state have received COVID-19 vaccine and 862,955 of them have completed the series by receiving two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or one dose of Johnson & Johnson's version. A slightly smaller number of around 800,000 Minnesotas are considered fully vaccinated. That means it has been 14 days since their final doses and the vaccine has had time to trigger an effective response by the immune system.

State infectious disease director Kris Ehresmann said the fraction of fully vaccinated people who contracted breakthrough infections was expected, even with clinical trials suggesting the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were 95% effective.

(snip)

Out of caution, the state is reviewing the cases to see if they have anything in common, Ehresmann said. A cluster of cases vaccinated at the same site could suggest a handling problem with the vaccine, or that a lot was tainted. State health officials interviewed 72 of the patients and found that 30 had symptomatic COVID-19. Many were identified through routine testing in long-term care facilities. Of 95 COVID-19 patients admitted to M Health Fairview hospitals in the metro area on Wednesday, only one had been fully vaccinated.

Assuming a 95% efficacy rate, and given Minnesota's current positive test of 4.9%, that percentage is over 20 times smaller than would be expected.

Unless, of course, there's many more vaccinated who got infected but never realized it! The vaccines greatly diminish the severity of symptoms too, so it makes sense.

Had my Moderna series December and January...I continue my COVID 19 prevention protocols without " slipping".. I do not assume I can not get it especially since so many non maskers etc are acting out in defiance...plus, everything is opening up like restaurants with noted patrons not complying... parking lots full... Denial is strong in Dayton Ohio.

... enough lately to notice.

My grocery pick-up order a few days ago was certainly less busy than usual. My car was the only one there! It seemed that almost everyone else chose to walk inside. Everyone that I saw was wearing masks, at least.

More people need to realize that they can still get infected even if they're fully vaccinated. The odds of being hospitalized or dying are extremely low, but that might change if the virus keeps spreading and we get new variants!

But they seem to completely prevent serious disease leading to hospitalization or death. While not quite as wonderful as preventing the disease in the first place, it's quite worthwhile.
