LANSING Democrats are taking steps to safeguard the board that certifies elections in Michigan from the influence of state Republican Party Chairwoman Kristina Karamo, who rose to political prominence by spreading unproven claims of voter fraud.

Currently, each party holds two seats on the state canvassing board that gives the final approval to election results. When a seat is open, the chair of the party that controls the seat gets to nominate three people, and the governor must pick one individual from the list.
Under the provisions in the new proposal, in addition to the chair's nominations, the top lawmaker in the House with the party affiliation of the seat in question and the top lawmaker in the Senate with that party affiliation would each get to make a nomination.
That means the next time a Republican position on the canvassing board is available, Karamo wouldn't be the only official to nominate candidates to fill it. House Minority Leader Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, and Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, would each get to make a nomination, as well.
