(
Detroit Free Press) Former U.S. Rep . Peter Meijer, a member of the family that founded the grocery store chain and who showed an independent streak through his one term in Congress, announced Monday that he would formally enter the race for the Republican nomination to succeed U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.

In August, Meijer created an exploratory committee to look into a run for the seat. Stabenow announced early this year she would not run for a fifth 6-year term.
"My wife and I prayed hard about this race and how we can best serve our state and our nation," Meijer said in a statement released on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter on Monday. "We considered every aspect of the campaign and are confident we have the best chance of taking back this seat for the Republicans and fighting hard for a conservative future." .............(more)
