https://www.woodtv.com/news/michigan/adam-fox-sentencing-gov-gretchen-whitmer-kidnapping-plot/Not nearly enough IMO. Should have gotten life as this was a crime to terrorize a political leader and her party.

(176,848 posts)He's only 38 and so will only be in his 50s when he gets out. Gov. Whitmer will live with the terror of the kidnapping attempt all her life.

(33,643 posts)agree with you.
But it was a plot/conspiracy, not an 'attempt'.
16 years seems reasonable to me for a plot, that is no joke of a sentence in my book.
Imagine yourself having spent years 38-54 of your life in federal prison?
Just sayin.

(33,643 posts)When you consider it was a conspiracy/plot, that may or may not have happened in the end ... it's a significant sentence.

(21,750 posts)This was a ploy to kill an elected leader with a goal of intimidating other elected leaders and the voters in general. 16 years is a huge win for the defense.

(33,643 posts)I would bet the prosecution shot for 'life' and were pretty happy to get 16 years.
The problem with prosecuting 'plots' is that there's always a question of whether or not they'd have ever come to fruition/if the final steps would've been taken.
Had they gotten as far as trying to break into a place she was staying, that would've changed the situation hugely, but that didn't happen.
And I think a 'huge' win for the Defense would've been no jail time because no plot could be concretely proven.
I think this sentence was, at best for either side ... a draw.

(5,125 posts)A snatch and grab can happen anywhere.
The plot may have been stupid and not fully thought out, but the intent was clearly there and worked on for a long time.

Adam Fox
Adam Fox was the mastermind of the plot.[46] He was born Adam Waggoner but changed his last name to his mother's maiden name in 2014.[47] He had been living in the basement of his former employer, a vacuum repair shop in Grand Rapids. Fox received permission for that living arrangement from the shop's owner who felt empathy towards Fox, as Fox was homeless and had dogs. The basement was used to hold multiple meetings discussing the plot.[48][49][50] Fox posted a YouTube video in June, mentioning Whitmer's handling of the pandemic as one of his motives for the plot.[2] According to his employer, Fox espoused anti-police and anti-government views, along with support for the boogaloo movement, and had recently become worried about the U.S. becoming a communist country and Democratic politicians taking away his guns.[49] Fox had previously been a member of another militia group called the Michigan Home Guard, but he was kicked out due to "rage issues" and threatening other members on social media.[19]
While under surveillance, Fox was recorded by the FBI as saying "Snatch and grab, man. Grab the fuckin governor. Just grab the bitch. Because at that point, we do that... its over" and "I want to have the governor hog-tied, laid out on a table, while we all pose around like we just made the worlds biggest goddamn drug bust, bro."[51]

(33,643 posts)which is not a joke of a sentence for a kidnapping plot that never got past the 'plotting' stage.
I'd have loved to see more of course but at the same time, I could've imagined it being less, so I'm fairly satisfied with that outcome

(5,125 posts)Because these groups are loosely coordinated, being able to dish out harsh sentences and lock people up who want to start another Civil War and have plotted to begin their part in it.....
IF THESE WERE MUSLIMS or BLM and they planned to kidnap a ReTHUG GOV..... how would the sentencing look?
Getting groups that plan to overthrow the government categorized as Domestic Terrorists and slamming them down hard will be a deterrent.
If those people who had "gone along with" the JAN 6 group even though they didn't plan on being violent, brought no guns etc....
IF THOSE people KNEW the groups leading them to the Capitol were classified as DOMESTIC TERRORISTS and anyone with them would get the FULL FORCE of the LAW brought down on them to protect the elected leaders trying to do their job...
IF they KNEW that in advance... would they have even showed up?
Having different views is one thing. We can free speech that.
BUT ONCE PEOPLE START BRINGING GUNS to the conversation.... it's NOT JUST TALK, it's coercion.
Having your own viewpoint is fine.
Demanding that everyone is required to have your viewpoint is another thing.

(5,125 posts)It just concerns me that all these little cells of people calling themselves Militia this or that feel free to impose their will on people and want to overthrow Democracy and install a dictator.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)And it's ESPECIALLY galling given the way that the peaceful protesters of 'Cop City' are being treated i.e. arrested on a 'domestic terrorism' beef simply for occupying some space. It's some freaking BS right there.

(5,125 posts)Civil Disobedience expressing their objection to a steam roller over the people by putting themselves in harms way is "Terrorism"
BUT PLANNING TO KIDNAP a Gov is .... what? Oh just boys will be boys.
