Democrats, GOP eye Downriver seats in fight to control Michigan House

Wyandotte — Two state House races in Wayne County's Downriver communities have become a battleground for Republicans and Democrats as they eye a chance at flipping either district in an effort to secure a majority in the lower chamber.

But voter turnout in the presidential election is likely to influence the ultimate outcome of the races in the 27th and 28th House districts, where a Democratic and a Republican incumbent have been targeted.

In the 27th House District, Democratic state Rep. Jaime Churches is in a tough reelection race against GOP challenger Rylee Linting. Republicans see this district in Wyandotte and Grosse Ile as one of their best chances of flipping a seat.

Just to the west, in the 28th House District, Democrats are trying to upset Republican Rep. Jamie Thompson in another race that could shake up the House map. Thompson is being challenged by Democrat Janise O’Neil Robinson in a district that covers parts of Wayne and Monroe counties, including South Rockwood, Rockwood, Flat Rock, Woodhaven, Brownstown Township, part of Taylor, Berlin Township and Newport.
