Michigan teens getting registered to vote ahead of eligibility
Maddie Moore is two years away from being able to cast a ballot in an election, but the Michigan teen took the step of preregistering to vote at her Livingston County high school last week.
While the legal age to vote in Michigan remains at 18, under a public act narrowly approved by state lawmakers last year in the Democratic-led Legislature, nearly 127,000 young people in Michigan between the ages of 16-17.5 years are eligible to preregister to vote.
Under the law, 16 and 17-year-olds who obtain a drivers license or state ID at a Secretary of State office will be automatically preregistered to vote unless they opt out. Teens also have the option completing a preregistration application form in person at school, like Maddie did at Hartland High School last week where her district held a voter registration and preregistration drive.
Moore, 16, said she decided to preregister after her online Advanced Placement government teacher told her about the change in the law and the opportunity to fill out the paperwork in school on Tuesday. Maddie said she also spoke to her parents about voting.
