Board of State Canvassers axes recalls, moves forward on property tax and zoning measures

(Michigan Advance) At its meeting on Friday, the Michigan Board of State Canvassers considered a number of petitions, including efforts to recall the governor, attorney general and secretary of state.

The meeting which began at 10 a.m. stretched into the afternoon, with the board concluding the meeting around 4:30 p.m. after considering three recall efforts, a proposed amendment to the state constitution to ban property taxes, and an effort to repeal changes to how the state permits large-scale renewable energy projects.

The board, which is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, began by considering petitions filed by Chad E. Baase, 43, for the recall of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Attorney General Dana Nessel, who are all Democrats.

In his effort to remove Whitmer, Baase claims she “Budgeted funding for Law Enforcement throughout Michigan that enforce Michigan Statutes that have similarities to Slave Licensing, Black Codes, and Jim Crow Laws without adequate safeguards to prevent from discrimination against low income individuals and communities echoing the behavior of slave traders against those of color,” leveling similar accusations in his petitions against Benson and Nessel. ...............(more)

This is the summary language in the approved petition:
““Constitutional Amendment to: Prohibit real property taxes, which currently are the primary funding source for schools, community colleges, parks, and other local government units; shift 10% of state sales, income, and other tax revenue from the state to counties, cities, townships and villages, but not to schools, community colleges, parks or other local government units; eliminate property tax exemption for religious and educational organizations; require 60% of voters to approve any local taxes; require ⅔ vote of Legislature for any non-minimal tax increase; require implementing legislation.”

They aim to cripple education in Michigan and defund local government services, and erect a nearby insurmountable barrier to prevent the state from raising other revenues.

Thanks for the post, marmar.
