Judge: 37 months in prison for developer who billed $2.3M for work never done on Worcester project

WORCESTER - A developer who was presumably overseeing the renovation of a large apartment building on May Street was sentenced to 37 months in prison for taking federal funds for work that was never done.

The $2.3 million scheme occurred in 2010 and 2011.

James E. Levin, 62, formerly of Natick and most recently living on Nantucket, was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

In September 2020, he pleaded guilty to the charges, brought by federal prosecutors.

The case revolves around a 13-unit apartment complex in the city’s Main South neighborhood. Levin was a developer who had applied for federal funds to renovate the building, at 5 May St. The project was backed by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
