Dedham teachers kick off first teachers’ strike in state in 12 years after two years of failed negotiationsU.S. Rep Joe Kennedy joined the picket lines to show support for Dedham Public Schools teachers who kicked off a strike on Friday.
“You want to fight for basic economic fairness, for economic justice, for economic dignity, for your families, for your futures as you educate the future leaders and future citizens of our country,” Kennedy told the sign-hoisting crowd, according to a video tweeted by Quincy Walters of WBUR. “It’s the basic guarantee that this country makes.”

Kennedy in September began a primary challenge against incumbent Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey. Labor attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan entered the primary race in the spring.
Markey couldn’t attend the strike because he was slated to speak at the Mothers Against Violence national conference. But in a statement, the senator said he stood with the teachers in their protracted contract battle, and he strongly encouraged both sides to return to the negotiating table.
