Town lends helping hand for Puerto Rican students
Twenty-one students from Puerto Rico have temporarily continued their schooling in Braintree as the island continues to recover from the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
The community has stepped up in a big way, Mayor Joseph Sullivan said while speaking about the displaced students at Monday nights school committee meeting.
Sullivan said the students were taken in by Braintree after a directive from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is also known as FEMA. Recently, Sullivan said the FEMA directive was extended for another month.
The mayor said thousands of Puerto Rican students are now sprinkled throughout towns and cities in Massachusetts as much of the island territory remains without power.
