Mayor Walsh calls Boston 'stronger than ever'
Mayor Martin J. Walsh countered mayoral challenger Tito Jackson's claims of a city divided between haves and have-nots with a State of the City speech tonight that trumpeted achievements and promises in education and public safety while promoting his vision of Boston that benefits everyone.
Boston is "a city with its values written into its DNA, a city that lifts everyone as it rises and a city with a future even greater than our past," Walsh told a packed Symphony Hall. He added: "The state of our city is stronger than it's ever been in our history."
Touting increased jobs, decreased violent crime and low unemployment, Walsh's speech pushed back on claims Jackson, the Roxbury city councilor, made last week when he announced his candidacy for mayor. Walsh mentioned projects in Roxbury eight times, more than in any other neighborhood.
But Walsh also said he wanted to address concerns about inequality that Jackson has also raised.
