Southcoast, Care New England end plans for $2 billion, eight-hospital merger

NEW BEDFORD — A proposed $2 billion merger involving eight hospitals in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts was called off Monday, as Southcoast Health and Care New England announced an end to talks that formally began almost a year ago.

“We have a great deal of respect for our counterparts at Care New England, their staff and their high-quality programs. However, we believe that it is best for both parties to end affiliation discussions,” said Jean MacCormack, chair of the Southcoast Health Board of Trustees.

Southcoast Health System is one of the region’s largest employers and includes St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, Charlton Memorial in Fall River, Tobey Hospital in Wareham and Southcoast Behavioral Health in Dartmouth, a joint venture hospital with Acadia Healthcare.

Care New England Health (CNE) operates four hospitals, all in Rhode Island, in addition to several other facilities.
