Wynn stops cleanup at casino site

Wynn Resorts has fired its latest salvo in the battle over its $1.7 billion Everett casino, organizing a press conference to announce a delay in the cleanup of the contaminated site and placing the blame squarely on Somerville Mayor
Joseph Curtatone, who has challenged a key
environmental permit.
For someone to say their biggest concern about this hotel being built is the environment, well how about all the people who have died in the city of Everett, who are
dealing with cancer? said Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria. This site were sitting on is continually leaching into Boston Harbor.
Wynn is nearly finished with the first phase of cleanup on the former Monsanto Chemical land, but will not be able to start the second phase, which includes dredging and shoreline cleanup, said Robert DeSalvio, president of Wynn Everett, because Somerville has appealed the state Chapter 91 license for the project, which is
required for waterfront development.
We cannot move forward with the remediation, and that is not by choice, DeSalvio said. We want to make sure we dont run afoul of an environmental regulation or law.
