Stop & Shop, union workers down to wire on contracts

Saturday, February 27, 2016

Representatives of Stop & Shop Supermarket Co.’s Quincy-based New England division and five United Food and Commercial Workers locals were expected to
negotiate through the night in Providence as the clock ticks toward today’s midnight expiration of the contracts for 35,000 workers at the grocery chain’s Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut stores.

UFCW Local 1445, based in Dedham, will hold a meeting tomorrow morning in Randolph for its members to vote on a proposed contract or to authorize a strike.

“The company is still looking to increase the out-of-pocket expenses for the workers’ health insurance, they’re still looking at reductions in pensions for current and future workers and they are still offering a wage proposal that is inadequate,” Local 1445 political director Jim Carvalho said early last night.

A spokesman for Stop & Shop, which has been hiring replacement workers in the event of a strike or lockout, yesterday said the company always has reached a fair agreement with the union locals and does not expect this time to be any different.

I had no idea there might be a strike. I'm in Connecticut, so it will affect us, too. My bf and I will not cross a picket line if that happens.

Again, thanks for the heads up.
