BROCKTON, Mass. For the last week, Reyland Olid, 42, has been waking up in the early morning hours to walk an hour from his Howard Street home to his 4 a.m. shift at BJ's Wholesale Club in Stoughton.
On Saturday, the bicycle that Olid had previously used to get to work was stolen from him when he was robbed at knifepoint by two men near the intersection of North Montello and Ames streets in Brockton, the Brockton Enterprise reported.
Olid was on his way to a repair shop to have a piece welded onto the bike -- which he purchased for $60 at a flea market -- when he was robbed. "I said, 'Take my bike, but don't hurt me,'" Olid said, recounting the incident.
Without the bike, though, Olid had lost his only form of transportation to and from work. An immigrant from the Philippines, Olid said he sends the majority of his paycheck back home each month to help pay for his daughter's education. She is currently in college and studying to become a doctor.
However, his luck began to change this week when one of Olid's co-workers brought his plight to the attention of Officer Rosie Vasquez-Browne at the Brockton Police Department. Vasquez-Browne, who is known for her efforts helping the city's residents through Project Guardian Angels, immediately took up the cause and began working on finding Olid a new bicycle.
"To him, that's his livelihood for his daughter," Vasquez-Browne said about the bike.
On Thursday, Olid and Vasquez-Browne met at the Wal-Mart on Oak Street, where the store had agreed to donate a new bicycle for Olid.....
