Corrosion, rust among key I-90 tunnel troubles

Big Dig plagued with heavy rust, corrosion, inspectors find
UPDATED 5:29 AM EDT Oct 27, 2015

BOSTON —State highway inspectors have raised concerns in the past year about heavy rust on construction joints, missing steel cover plates and heavy corrosion in the Big Dig tunnels, a review by The Boston Herald found.

The I-90 connector had the most deficiencies.

Inspection reports cited by the Herald found "heavy rust" on construction joints inside the westbound MassPike connector over the summer. The rust was so severe the joints were giving a "poor rating" by highway inspectors.

On the eastbound side, the leaking ceiling above a travel lane back was marked as a "major deficiency."

How many billions of dollars for this, 24?--how many billions yet to go to keep this endeavor in safe operation. Fiasco from start to finish.
OK, I'll admit that the tunnel has been a great short cut but every time I use it to go to the South Shore, I cringe.

Water dribbling down the walls, puddles, light problems, --those things are obvious. What is not obvious is the state of the of the tunnel structure. Ceilings falling, ceiling bolts cracking, who knows what else lurks.

And...I really don't notice a real change in the incredible Boston, north to south traffic problems. Horrible before the 'big dig, still horrible.
Great planners we have in this great state!
