Stinky algae bloom closes Charles River to swimming
1:07 PM EDT Aug 14, 2015

BOSTON —An algae bloom has closed parts of the Charles River to swimming, state health officials said.

A water sample collected Monday at Magazine Beach Park along the Charles River in Cambridge revealed levels of an algae called cyanobacteria higher than what is considered safe for swimming, according to the Department of Public Health.

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation issued a public advisory and posted signs at each access point from the Weld Boathouse in Cambridge to the Charles River Dam.

The blue-green algae outbreak can result in murky water and a foul odor. The blooms are relatively common in the summer.
