Man asks for bail reduction to $5K, judge raises it to $500K

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. —A Becket man charged with stealing from more than 100 homes had his request to reduce his bail to $5,000 backfire when the judge increased it to $500,000.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that the decision came Tuesday after James Tarjick Jr.'s attorney told the judge his client owned a house and had posted $10,000 bail on similar charges in Berkshire County.

The judge said he doesn't believe the 42-year-old Tarjick told the Probation Department he owns a home. The judge says the information Tarjick provided to the department is "suspect" and set bail at $500,000.

Tarjick and his brother are charged with breaking into more than 100 homes in western Massachusetts. He's pleaded not guilty to 24 charges. His brother, Aaron, is already in prison on unrelated child rape charges.
