BOSTON — Massachusetts has received a federal grant of more than $700,000 to help defray costs of advanced placement exams for low-income students.

The U.S. Education Department on Wednesday announced a total of $28.4 million in grants to 38 states, Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands.

Department Delegated Deputy Secretary John King said the grants help to eliminate barriers for “historically underserved students” including African-American and Latino students.

The tests can cost nearly $100 but the grants could cut costs to as little as $12 for some students.
