BRAINTREE The roofs of Braintree High School and East Middle School will house solar panels to generate electricity for Braintree residents.
Under the plan, approved by a 5-2 vote of the school committee Monday night, the Braintree Electric Light Department will lease space on the two school roofs for 20 years. The department will then sublease the space to Ameresco, a Framingham-based company, who will install arrays of solar panels.
William Bottiggi, the light department general manager, the installations will be capable of generating 1.3 million kilowatts of electricity, about the same as the solar arrays atop the closed landfill on Ivory Street.
Bottiggi said all school building had been checked, but these were the only two suitable for the solar installations.
