TRURO Seventeen great white sharks were spotted off Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge in Chatham on Thursday, according to The Cape Cod Times.
Researchers of the Shark Research Program conduct research twice a week in the summer in Orleans and Chatham. Typically, five sharks are seen each trip.

So when the 17 sharks were spotted, Chatham Parks and Recreation Director Dan Tobin was surprised. He had no idea so many great whites were situated a couple miles away from Lighthouse Beach.
"Last year in September, we were seeing larger numbers of sharks in that area," said Cynthia Wigren of the Atlantic White Shark Conservatory. "It's not unique to see that many, but it is unique that it's earlier in the season so that's the difference right now."
