Moviegoers will be barred from bringing backpacks and packages to National Amusements Inc. cinemas and should be prepared to be searched on the way in as part of new security measures implemented in the wake of two recent theater shootings elsewhere in the U.S.

But a local security expert warns it won’t be enough to
protect patrons.

“To ensure the safety of our guests and employees, for the time being, we are prohibiting any and all backpacks and packages as well as reserving the right to inspect the contents of any purse or bag prior to admission,” Norwood-based National Amusements Inc. said yesterday in a statement.

The company owns 31 U.S. movie theaters operating under the Showcase, Multiplex, SuperLux and Cinema de Lux brands in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Ohio.
