Officials approve 1-year delay in Springfield casino opening

Massachusetts regulators have approved a request by MGM to delay the opening of its Springfield casino for a year. They also approved a plan for live horse racing to return to Suffolk Downs in Boston.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission signed off on both proposals Thursday.
MGM asked for the casino opening to be pushed back to September 2018 because of a major project nearby on Interstate 91 that won't be completed until the summer of 2018. Casino officials said the highway project is expected to cause significant traffic congestion.
The $800 million hotel, casino and entertainment complex had been expected to open in the fall of 2017.
