U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch is urging an energy company that wants to build a controversial compressor station near the Fore River in Weymouth to consider alternate locations, Weymouth Mayor Sue Kay said Friday.

On Friday morning, Kay attended a meeting with Lynch, Quincy Mayor William Koch, Braintree Mayor Joseph Sullivan and executives from Spectra Energy.

“I’ve got a very comfortable feeling that the congressman is looking out for the community and has pretty much the same concern about the dangers,” she said after the meeting, which took place in Lynch’s Boston office. “We talked about alternative sites.”

Municipal leaders and local residents have vocally opposed Spectra’s efforts to build a natural gas compressor station in North Weymouth, arguing that the Fore River basin is already overburdened with industrial activity that includes an oil terminal and shipping port, a utility company and a chemical manufacturer.
