Boston's Olympic bid is over, and most Taunton taxpayers say good riddance

The U.S. Olympic Committee decided on Monday to pull the plug on Boston's bid to host the 2024 Olympics, citing a lack of popular interest.

TAUNTON — Many Taunton-area taxpayers are breathing a sigh of relief after a national committee dropped its support for the 2024 Olympics in Boston.

“Good, I never wanted it in Boston, anyway, right from when they first said ‘Boston,’” said Claudine McGuire, a Taunton grandmother. “I think it would be a waste of money for the taxpayers. And money can be spent on more important things in Massachusetts. ... I myself would rather watch the Olympics on TV.”

On Monday, U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun admitted, in a public statement pulling the plug on Boston 2024, that popular sentiment in Massachusetts was against hosting the international competition in the state. The U.S. Olympic Committee put its full support behind the Boston bid about seven months ago as America’s potential host city, over cities like Los Angeles, which may now be back in the running.

“We have not been able to get a majority of citizens to support hosting the 2024 Olympics and Paralympic Games,” Blackmun said in the statement. “Therefore, the USOC does not think the level of support enjoyed by Boston’s bid would allow it to prevail over great bids from Paris, Rome, Hamburg, Budapest or Toronto.”

Boston2024 could not sell a venue that was a) incomplete (no Velodrome or Media Center) and b) financed by taxpayer dollars.

This whole Olympic proposal was nothing more than a money making scheme for big biz. We, the people, did not want it and we won! Thanks to all those who worked to get this bid off the table. Massachusetts has enough problems without adding the Olympics to the picture.

It will be years before we recover from some of the other boondoggles--like the big dig--.
We don't need and thankfully will not have the Olympics.

Back to Greece permanently, my opinion.
