By Mark Arsenault

Bostons improbable dream to become host city for the 2024 Summer Olympics is suddenly a bit more real.
The city has made the United States Olympic Committees short list of potential 2024 host candidates, the committee confirmed Friday. Los Angeles, the host of the successful 1984 Summer Olympics; San Francisco; and Washington, D.C., are also on the list.
Making the short list is only a baby step in an arduous process, but it keeps alive the possibility of a Boston Olympics.

City and state political leaders generally reacted positively to the committees vote of confidence, without committing themselves to supporting a full-blown Olympic bid. Hosting the Olympics could cost billions of dollars for infrastructure that must be designed to have a use after the Games.

OP
I live in "Boston Proper." Is it awful to say that I REALLY don't want the Olympics in Boston?

I agree that it's insane to try to stuff an Olypics venue inside this state. n/t

There isn't exactly free space in Boston. While the explosion of cultural diversity would be compelling the economic and personal impact would be too difficult to overcome.

Now that Menino is out, he has to find new ways of lining his pockets.

Another, less congested part of Massachusetts, sure. But not Boston.

(45,251 posts)7. There must be someplace in Massachusetts where an Olympics venue might work?
I just don't think the City of Boston is one of those places. Not the Cape, either. The environment there is too fragile, I think.
