RNC sues Maryland election officials over voter roll maintenance
The Republican National Committee has filed a lawsuit against Maryland election officials, alleging they failed to maintain accurate voter rolls as required by federal law.
The lawsuit points out that at least two of Marylands most populous counties have more registered voters than adult citizens over the age of 18, which is described as impossibly high. Other counties report registration rates exceeding 95% of adult citizens over 18, while the Census indicates Marylands registration rate is about 75.6%.
Marylanders deserve to have confidence in their elections and to know that their state is properly maintaining its voter rolls, RNC Chairman Joe Gruters said in a news release. The State Board of Elections has failed to do its job and remove ineligible or deceased voters from its rolls. Marylanders have a right to accurate voter rolls, which is why the RNC is suing today.
Maryland has been taken to federal court twice in the last six years for not following federal law on voter roll maintenance and transparency, according to the news release. Federal law mandates that voter rolls be updated, ineligible registrations be removed, and public inspection be allowed, which the RNC claims Maryland has not done.
