Earlier today, the Maryland Natural Resources Police assisted with a water rescue after a

small plane crashed into the iced-over Beards Creek off the South River in Edgewater. Following the crash, two brave civilians and an Anne Arundel County Police officer quickly got into their kayaks and across the ice to rescue the pilot from the creek. The pilot was able to hold onto the kayak to stay afloat. Moments later, our officers showed up on the scene ready to help. One of our officers, Officer First Class Leavell, cut through the ice and pulled the pilot onto his patrol boat. Afterward, OFC Leavell transported the pilot to a nearby marina, where emergency services treated them for their injuries. We are grateful that through outstanding teamwork, a life was saved today.
